Firearms Amnesty

A three month firearms amnesty will commence on 1 March 2009 and conclude on 31 May 2009. The amnesty will allow persons to surrender firearms (including imitation and replica), firearm barrels, ammunition, magazines and silencers with no questions asked.

Under the amnesty:

  • People who do not hold a firearms licence or permit but currently have unregistered firearms in their possession, will be able to surrender those firearms to any police station without penalty;
  • People who do hold a firearms licence or permit but currently have unregistered firearms in their possession will be able to register those firearms, provided the licence held correctly matches the firearm category. Alternatively they will be able to surrender those firearms to any police station;
  • People who do not hold a licence or permit which authorises the possession of a barrel or ammunition, will be able to surrender those items to any police station; and
  • People who do not hold a prohibited weapon permit but currently have a silencer, specified magazines or an imitation/replica firearm, will be able to surrender those to any police station.
